Graduate Level: Designing Agent-Based RAG Systems

Design agent-based RAG systems: autonomously retrieve, analyze, and synthesize from doc collections

This lesson combines two of the most powerful concepts in AI: autonomous agents and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). A standard RAG system is a passive tool you query. An agent-based RAG system is an active one: the agent can autonomously decide, as part of a larger plan, that it needs to consult its private knowledge base to find the information required for its next step.

Related topics

  • Orchestrate tool use autonomously: agents that decide which tools to use based on task requirements
  • Manage context across multi-agent systems: sharing information between agents, maintaining conversation state
  • Build automated verification pipelines: agents that cross-reference sources, validate claims, and flag uncertainties
